By my observing, the H5P interactive video technology passes the evaluation of the SECTIONS framework. H5P’s advantages under the SECTIONS framework include ease of use, cost, teaching, teaching function, interaction, organization issues, networking, and Security. I chose SECTIONS over SAMR because I find the SECTIONS framework easier to evaluate since the principles are easier to understand and apply to any circumstances than SAMR.

From my H5P video about adding subtitles to Netflix, I believe I mainly followed two multimedia learning principles, the Redundancy principle and the Feedback principle. In my video, I never repeated any knowledge that I’ve already shared so that my potential learners could learn better by always taking new experiences in. The Feedback principle is the most common one in an H5P video since there are questions or notes at the critical parts, so the students will know if they truly understand the part, hence learn better.

When Dr.Ray introduced Dual Coding, he used the Multimedia Learning principle because of the combination of pictures and words. He also used the Signalling principle later in the video when he was introducing the Signalling principle.

When making a presentation, the split attention principle and the Signalling principle would help point out the key concept or idea that the presenter is trying to point out.

The Segmenting principle is the one I followed, and I have found that it is beneficial to follow when studying something challenging. I used to ignore the Pre-training principle, and as a result, I didn’t understand a thing in my first Biology class in college. Hence, following adaptable principles only enriches your learning.

  •   How would the Dual Coding Theory change how you create PowerPoint presentations?

According to Dual Coding Theory, humans process information in two different ways – visually and verbally. So when it comes to giving a PowerPoint presentation, to best make it a powerful presentation, the creator should consider using images and videos when discussing his presentation content. This way maximizes students learning potentials.

  • Why are we talking about the concept of Flow in a class about online and multimedia learning?

The concept of Flow can be used relating to online and multimedia learning because when students are guided to get to the state of Flow by the instructor, they learn much more efficiently. For example, the teacher can find tasks that the students want to do to motivate the students. The students should be allowed to make their choices during learning so that they own the learning experience. The instructor should also provide a matching level of difficulty for students so that it won’t be too easy, leading to boredom, or too challenging that leads to anxiety. Lastly, the teacher should consider removing as many distractions as possible, so students are more focused and are provided with more time and fewer tasks.

This week’s learning has widened my view of how designing and creating online and multimedia learning plans are not that simple. There is more going on than what’s on the surface. Teachers could provide students with better learning experiences and outcomes based on simple theories.

Outline one thing you hope to get out of this class, and one thing that you’re unsure about with this class:

I find education as one the of most important part of society. I hope to learn about how interactive and multimedia learning is created and used and also the various teaching methods related to it.

Can you think of an example of an interactive or learning experience that did not involve digital technology that you enjoyed or made a positive impact on you? What made it a positive experience?

I used to attend English lessons with interactive elements when I was 5, we learned words through images on cards an sentences through games with the whole class. I think it is very helpful to learn by being in an activity and interact with students and teachers.

To what degree was the example of Rich’s son playing a web-based game an example of interactive and/or multimedia learning?

A web-based game is a great example of interactive learning. The pictures, texts, visual effects are interactive to the player. The player interact with the story in the game which helps Rich’s son learn about this story better than, for example, being told the story verbally by someone else.

Reflection C

It’s been a great 3 months into taking EDCI 338 and I have learned a lot from the course materials and perspectives from my peers.

From the course materials, I learned something from every weekly message, and although all of them benefit how I see the world from the angle of social media, there are three parts that I feel blown away the most. The first one is about cyberbullying lesson plan. I know about cyberbullying for a long time, but I never thought about curing this phenomenon from its origin: young minds. the lesson plan Keena and I improved not only may someday teach kids, but also has taught me how to cope with cyberbullying. The second one is Media Triangle, the thoughts and ideas it present is very new to me, so I was and still am interested in this topic. The third one is all the social media companies we managed to connect through out the term. I have been using these apps for years but I’ve never used them professionally. Now I have developed new ways of expanding my PLN and it’s exciting. I visited several peers’ blogs sites and I found keena’s blog post on how health information science professionals use Youtube intriguing. The course has managed to change my whole perspective on the use and functions of social media. I see the power of it, and I’ve decided to use it well in the future.

WE ARE ALL CONNECTED !

What do we learn about when we check out someone’s social media accounts?

There are various types of information to discover when we check out one’s social media accounts, starting with one’s private information.

For instance, me, you will find my name, age, graduated school, address, etc.

You can also follow my regular sharing and posts to see my recent activities, where I was or even where I am right now.

When you check me out at a professional perspective, you will find me being fascinated by professional articles and materials in my field and sharing those discoveries. I would also post some daily life activities like some technology I just bought or a new computer set up I just DIYed.

I think the posts that most describes me as a professionals are often those ‘geeky’ materials where I share materials related to technology.

how do professionals in your field use Youtube? What did you notice? Like? Not like? 150 words max.

I am a computer science major and I frequently study and learn from professionals’ Youtube videos. Most people I subscribe make tutorial videos for students to learn and review. I notice that they usually produce better educational material comparing to school lessons and I really like checking out professionals’ tutorial videos after I finish class at school or before an exam. The only disadvantage of Youtube videos is I can’t really ask a question or communicate with the producers in time. They don’t usually respond to my comments.

Response to Google Infused Classroom

The article mainly talks about how social media is primarily considered as distraction at most educational institutions, but can be a significant tool to guide students toward more successful learning outcomes.

When I was in middle school, I moved to a closer location to campus for convenience. My temporary new home did not have any smartphones, computers, or wi-fi. So I was “offline” for almost 2 years. I didn’t like how it feels not to be online, but I have to admit I was able to learn better under that environment. My grades went up along the way, and I felt nothing was to distract me from school.

So, ever since middle school, I’ve always had this minor thought that social media is definitely a distraction for students, but after reading this article, I find that social media isn’t the source of this problem. The problem is that most schools don’t care or does not have enough funding to educate students how to use social media appropriately.

Overall, this subject is highly related to my field of study, computer science. Think about the movie Social Dilemma, the big social media companies do not care about the proper and humane way to design their software for customers, they only care about how long they spend on their apps to make more money. This means there needs to be help from school and parents to guide students how to use social media in a helpful way.

What makes a powerful and professional blog?

To me, there are various techniques to enrich the power of blogs.

  1. A drawing Title: Just like any article or advertisement, you want to draw the readers’ attention to get them start reading your work!
  2. A neat and formatted form of words: Don’t give a chance of getting dizzy and wondering to the reader’s head, make your points nice, clean, and understandable.
  3. Be convincing: Bring out solid evidence like statistics or images if you are proving a point.
  4. Upload Media: Use of images or videos not only to make your words more convincing, but also brighten up the whole blog and make your blog prettier and more professional.
  5. Make it worthy: Use your blog posts as a tool to grow other viewers’ PLN. Make the contents educational, professionally spreadable, and meaningful.
